Let us learn from the wisdom shared by some of these top business leaders....

Business Leaders Award winner Whitey Basson from Shoprite Checkers, at the helm for 30 years, believes:“I have to give as much attention to the guys who make the bread as I do to the guys who make the decisions as to where it’s made,”.
“I manage by trying to sleep on weekends. I sleep with one eye open.”
-
Top Company Award won by Chris Cory from Assore, a mining holding company’s success was built on: “it is good quality deposits and long-term relationships”.
“The company had been able to come through the global recession by being cost conscious and sticking to what it was good at, namely focusing on solid, long-term organic growth.”
-
Lifetime Achiever Award winner Brian Joffe believes that a successful business should be managed by entrepreneurs on a very decentralised basis. The important measurable is not profitability but returns. He adds “Gut feel is important for us; it’s been very good for us. We’ve made mistakes along the way, but gut feel is an important part of entrepreneurship.”

South Africa is hosting the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit on 21 September 2011 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
Leadership is one of the most talked about and published topics in the academic and business worlds.

Some thoughts and views on leadership are:
- Jeffrey Cohn and Jay Moran in their book “Why are we bad at picking good leaders. A better way to evaluate leadership potential” identifies seven key leadership attributes – integrity, empathy, emotional intelligence, vision, judgement, courage and passion – that need to be assessed accurately in order to make good leadership selection decisions
- Vadim Kotelnikov, inventor and founder of Ten3 Business e-Coach has captured and discusses 10 Roles of an Inspirational Leader:
- Provide and inspiring vision and strategic alignment, launch a crusade
- Help people connect their personal goals to business goals
- Make relentless innovation a religion
- Encourage entrepreneurial creativity and experimentation
- Involve everyone, empower and trust employees
- Coach and train your people to greatness
- Build teams and promote teamwork, leverage diversity
- Motivate, inspire and energise people, recognise achievements
- Encourage risk taking
- Make business fun
- Dwight D Eisenhower defines leadership as “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.”
Let us all use the month of September to further develop our knowledge and competence on leadership, much needed in these complex economic times.
