The position will deal with the following and are a must for all applicants.
1. Academic credibility
We feel that this is the most important requirement to be able to interface effectively within and outside the NHLS. The incumbent should be well qualified with an impressive research (preferably including being a PI on a substantial grant funded project) and a teaching portfolio in order to be respected by the academic fraternity which constitute the bulk of the NHLS stakeholders. Evidence of research and development initiatives as well as influential positions in academic bodies or discipline associations (e.g. College of Pathologists, Professional Societies etc.) would be an advantage.
2. Leadership and Management experience
We felt that this should be broadened to include Management positions of a Department/Division/Unit with substantial number of people i.e. we need to have a common understanding of ‘senior management’. The applicant should demonstrate actual
leadership and management experience, knowledge and skill.
3. Stakeholder management
The applicant should be able to demonstrate the ability and experience to manage diverse stakeholders with very strong and varying opinions and academic positions. Examples could include PI of research where there is a need to interface with ethics
committees, study sponsor, regulatory authority etc.
4. Quality assurance experience
Whilst this is critical in the context of the diagnostic functions of the NHLS, the requirement should be strategic leadership rather than hands on experience in the quality assurance system which is currently already in place in the NHLS and governed by fairly inflexible standards (ISO 15189 /9001) and established SOPs. We recognize that not everyone is able to get the experience in QA and this gap can be filled with courses. Should the candidate not be a pathologist, the QA requirements should be met prior to taking up an AARQA position since there may not have been exposure to relevant laboratory standards and SOPs (e.g. ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001).
